There is NEVER an excuse for leaving an aircraft on the ground for more than 3 hours; rather, an airline’s choice to do so is likely governed by the cost of returning the aircraft to the gate. The thought that an organization deemed qualified to routinely operate and maintain something as complex as a modern airliner might respond that they “can’t” avoid imprisoning people on an airplane is absurd. The rules should apply to all carriers and all airports. Further additional rulemaking should insure that when aircraft are on the ground, whether at the gate or not, adequate climate control and airflow be required in addition to access to toilets and water. …is a need to deboard an airplane. Lastly, penalties for violations should benefit the affected passengers – only when there is a direct cost to mistreating and delaying passengers will there be a sufficient incentive for carriers to treat passengers humanely. « less

Thank you for the comment, FedupPAX. You raise an interesting idea of allowing airlines to use each others gates when appropriate. The logistics of this idea may be difficult to implement though.
